I woke up this morning feeling curious about Creflo Dollar Ministries because, for whatever reason, I had a dream about the man last night. So... I woke up and began checking out his credentials because I wasn't convinced that a man that held the title Doctor Creflo Dollar could possibly still think that his teachings were true, just simply because any reputable seminary would not allow you to leave thinking that Jesus was rich.
Anywho... I kept checking and so it comes down to this being "Doctor" Creflo Dollar's educational history. I couldn't find this anywhere on the internet and then I just figured, well, if he's honest... it should be on his biography on his website. And it was, silly me. He received a Bachelors in Educational Therapy from Georgia Tech in 1984 and the "Doctor" title, which I see sported on all his websites and everywhere his name is mentioned, was not even an earned doctorate. Nope, it was an honorary doctorate given to him by Oral Roberts University in 1998. He happens to serve on the Board of Regents at that institution.
Personally, I came out of the prosperity movement. The first church that I went to was a prosperity church and I left after becoming extremely disillussioned with the beliefs of the Word of Faith movement. Reading the things I've read this morning makes me want to go throw up. This man has a personal entourage of "Pastoral Assistants" (aka bodyguards) that escort him everywhere. They even keep people in his congregation from touching or talking to him. Very unapproachable guy, but when you're running a cult then I guess that that is an advisable course of action.

Interesting stuff there Alex, I hadn't heard of this guy before. It is very scary stuff, I really do wonder how they can call themselves Christians and act like that... I didn't know that you came from a prosperity ministry, that is very cool to know that people can get out! There should be missionaries to prosperity ministries!
Well... I personally wouldn't go so far as to deny that they are Christians. It's not like I wasn't a Christian while I was in the prosperity movement. I just was a misled one. Truth is that many people leave the prosperity movement all the time. Unfortunately, many of them run away from God altogether, because the preachers are painting pictures of Him that aren't real. Some there are a few things that could happen: 1. They get rich and then believe it all the more, 2. They don't but dilute themselves to keep seeking and believing it, 3. They don't get it and leave upset with God because He didn't do what he was supposed to... 4. Just leave because you actually sit down and read the Bible for a change of pace.
Anywho... enough crabiness... I just don't want to come across that I think that they aren't Christians. I actually was very encouraged in my life by people who were from the Word of Faith movement. They are people that have an amazing ability to believe God can do the impossible and we as mainstream Christians can learn a lot from that.
Thanks Alex, it is good to hear that. I think I all too often jsut write them off without actually thinking about the people in the movement. I appreciate that comment. Christians are ideally supposed to build each other up and hopefully there would be people around those trying to leave that ministry that would show them a (hopefuly) more accurate representation of who God is and what He does.
